Garment Care Guide
How to Take Care of Your Bespoke Suits & Blazers
Proper care of your suits and blazers doesn’t have to be daunting. With a few simple practices, you can ensure they stay looking fresh and last longer.
Maintaining Your Bespoke Suit
Let It Breathe
Wool has natural self-cleaning properties. Linen and cotton fabrics benefit from air circulation to stay fresh. After wearing, hang your suit in a well-ventilated area for a few hours or up to a day to allow it to dry and regain its shape. This helps prevent odors and bacterial growth. For a quick refresh, you can hang the suit in the bathroom while you shower; the steam will help smooth out light creases and keep the fabric feeling refreshed.
Rotate Your Suits
Just as you need time to unwind, so does your suit. After each wear, hang it up and let it rest for 24-48 hours before donning it again. This practice helps minimize trips to the dry cleaner.
Use a Suit Brush
Opt for a genuine boar hair brush to keep your suit free of dust and lint. The soft yet firm bristles effectively remove particles without harming the fabric. Regular brushing with a high-quality brush helps maintain the suit’s natural fibers and extend its lifespan.
To preserve the delicate fabric of your suit, avoid ironing unless the care label explicitly permits it. Instead, use a high-quality steamer to remove wrinkles and creases. Steaming not only smooths out the fabric but also deodorizes and lightly cleans your suit, effectively eliminating odor-causing bacteria.
Cleaning Your Suit
Spot Cleaning
Frequent dry cleaning can wear out your suit. For minor stains, use a clean, slightly damp cloth with a stain remover or mild detergent. Gently dab the stain and let it lift naturally—never scrub. Test any cleaner on a hidden area first. For more significant stains, consult a professional cleaner.
Dry Cleaning
Limit dry cleaning to no more than three times a year. When you do take your suit to the cleaners, always clean the jacket and trousers together to maintain consistent color and texture.
Storage
Choose a Garment Bag
Store your suit upright in a breathable garment bag. Avoid plastic bags, as they can trap moisture and lead to mould and mildew.
Hang Properly
Use a broad wooden hanger—preferably cedar—to maintain the suit’s shape. Cedar absorbs moisture and repels insects, preserving the suit’s condition. Hang trousers from the hem on a felt clamp hanger to smooth out wrinkles without adding new ones.
By following these guidelines, your suits and blazers will remain sharp and stylish for years.
